DiGrigoli School of Cosmetology is hoping to nail new business by shifting its operating model from a mix of schooling and retail to education only.
The cosmetology school and DiGrigoli Salon had shared space on Riverdale Street for nearly 2 decades. But the time came to close the hair salon and use that space to expand the school by adding nail and esthetics programs.
DiGrigoli shut down the salon in February. A company spokesperson said the three stylists who worked there have already found other jobs.
The region used to have an abundance of cosmetology schools and programs, but most have closed. DiGrigoli is now in high demand from students who want a full cosmetology program which includes nails and esthetics.
“We have been getting an overflow of requests from people interested in enrolling in our cosmetology programs. We needed space the salon occupied so we could add those new programs to our curriculum, and this was a good time to do it,” said Judi Real, DiGrigoli marketing director.
DiGrigoli is renovating its space to accommodate the new classes, students and instructors. The company plans to unveil its updated curriculum this fall. DiGrigoli continues to operate with its existing programs. It currently has nearly a dozen employees with plans to add two instructors to teach the nail and esthetics classes.
The demand for cosmetology students slowed during the pandemic as people avoided getting their hair, makeup and nails done at salons. But with COVID cases waning, people are heading back out for those professional services.
“There was a silence there for awhile as people were trying to figure things out. But salons are once again reaching out to us. We always have a handful of salons chasing us for students,” Real said.
Real said the company is confident it’s making the right decision by closing the salon and expanding the school. She said by adding nails and esthetics to the curriculum, the school will attract more students because there is a high demand for those and other services.
“There’s always a decent amount of demand for anything in the beauty industry. It’s something that’s not going to go away anytime soon. It’s not going to be replaced by computers or technology. It’s a creative and fun industry,” Real said.
DiGrigoli is hoping the salon’s former clients will take advantage of hair and basic manicure services at the school’s student salon. DiGrigoli has no plans to open another professional salon in the immediate future. The school currently has more than 60 students in its full-time and part-time programs.
